FAQ

Q: What are your hours?

A: We don’t have hours or paid staff. Members have 24/7/365 access.

Q: Do you have to be a member to climb at the KCC?

A: No, but you would have to be the guest of a member. Other than that, you cannot just pay a day fee and climb – again we are a club not a gym.

Q: How do I become a member.

A: First you must be 18 years old. You must: read the rules, take the quiz, fill out a waiver, complete the quiz (which you must pass), demonstrate competency at top rope belaying, pay at least one month’s dues (see dues question) and pay a $5.00 one-time fee. After which, you will be issued a belay certification tag. The access information will be e-mailed to you when your payment is processed.

Q: I’m interested in climbing, can I just try it out before becoming a member?

A: Yes, but you will need to be the guest of a member. To just try out climbing we suggest to start at a regular gym, like Bliss or the YMCA. They have rental equipment and staff instruction available. They also provide auto bely systems if you don’t have a climbing partner.

Q: I’m interested in climbing but just starting out, do you provide equipment, like ropes and shoes and harnesses?

A: We do not have any rental equipment available. For this reason, we suggest going to a traditional commercial gym to try out climbing before purchasing any equipment.

Q: Is there a belay class for people that don’t know how to belay?

A: Yes. Sign up on the white board with your phone number or directly talk to one of the staff. The person that teaches the belay class will call you when there are enough folks signed up to have the class. The YMCA, Genesis, and Bliss also have classes with a more consistent schedule.

Q: I’m interested in climbing but don’t have a climbing partner, can I still climb at the KCC?

A: Yes, normal days for staff climbing are Tuesday and Thursday from 4:30 – 6:30pm. Anyone is welcome to climb with us. We do not have auto belays.

Q: What do I need to bring to the membership class?

A: Your harness and belay device w/ locking carabiner. Chalk and chalk bag, shoes, and rope are optional. The KCC does not supply any equipment during or after membership. Membership payment on the website is required.

Q: Where can I buy climbing gear in Wichita?

A: We recommend REI. They have everything you need including helpful and knowledgeable employees.

Q: Is the club climate controlled.

A: Heat yes, A/C no.

Q: What kind of climbing can I expect at the club.

A: Bouldering, top rope and lead climbing. >12000 sq ft of climbing surface in 4 chambers and two outside walls: slab, crack, roof, vertical, over backwards, crimps, jugs, slopers and jams.

Q: Can you climb outside at night?

A: The two outside walls have lighting.

Q: Does the club have any auto belay systems?

A: Not at this time.
